The master yacht builders Amels are Hollands leading constructors of luxury yachts. Amels was formed in 1918 and have been a member of Damen Shipyards Group since 1991, and have revolutionised the semi custom marketplace. Amels has launched more than 30 superb custom yachts, which are universally admired for their quality. Vessels built by Amels include: Lady Mona K (1986), originally named Lady Ghislaine and built for media mogul Robert Maxwell, who drowned either falling or stepping from the ship while anchored off Tenerife on November 5, 1991; Monte Carlo (1988); Larissa (2004); and Sea Rhapsody (2012) to name a few.
They have been very successful with their limited editions. The value of an Amels limited edition for the customer is for them to save time in the construction process by choosing one which is semi fabricated before the owners fitting instructions are applied. The fitting can still lend an aura of uniqueness to the final delivered vessel.
Amels has also specialised in marketing the Sea Fox a fast yacht support vessel, designed to support the super yacht by carrying around ancillary equipment and for stowing all that gear, an irksome task on boats that don’t have a support vessel.
The Sea Fox can carry an array of support equipment ranging from the insignificant up to tenders and even helicopters. It is designed to free up valuable space aboard the mother ship, and can act as a floating crew quarters. They are tough workmanlike craft, capable of going wherever the mother ship can go, so ocean capability is necessary.
Amels also specialises in refit and overhaul work. With over 30 boats launched in just over 25 years they have also refitted and relaunched at least as many again.
Their shipyard is now situated at the Royal Schelde Shipyard in Holland. The capacity at any one time is 6 yachts either being built or refitted all in covered dry docks. There is also a large area dedicated to sub contractors.
The largest construction at the yard so far is the Ilona at almost 74 metres. But most of the boats constructed are at the larger end. Were Dreams, La Mirage, and Deniki are all around 52 metres, whilst Shanti is 64 metres and Lady Anne at 68 metres.
Overall then Amels provides a top end service for buyers of superyachts with an emphasis on all the support that is required to support and make comfortable existence.
Several Amels yachts are based permanently in the summer in the Mediterranean and then move to the Caribbean in our winter. Ports on the med where they can often be seen include Cannes, Nice, and Monaco and if you ever feel the need to charter Bluewater yachting in Antibes charters Motoryacht Solemar.
